Kids love to dance. As babies and toddlers, children show awareness and a positive response to music and movement. Why not help encourage develop this natural skill by sending your kids to formal dance classes? Research has shown how beneficial dance as a hobby is to your child’s development and well-being. From starting their first Toddler ‘Rhythm and Movement’ class to selecting your child’s leotards or first pair of ballet shoes, here are our top five benefits in getting your kids dancing.

Physical development – Dance provides excellent all-round exercise benefits. It helps develop strength, stamina, and suppleness. It also improves balance and co-ordination and gets the heart pumping. All children should be doing some form of exercise to keep them healthy for their childhood and to encourage a good pattern of activity for later life, so the earlier they start, the better!

Mental development – dance is not just a physical exercise! It requires focus and concentration to succeed and developing this from an early age will really help your child. It also exposes children to music, language, rhythm, and communication which has been shown to help them in their reading, writing and number skills at school.

Self-discipline – Attending class regularly and having to focus on specific instructions encourages discipline in kids. Learning new steps and positions takes patience and practice both in class and at home. It is rewarding for your child to see how ‘practice makes perfect’. In addition, some dance forms, such as classical ballet, require children to be dressed appropriately for the class, such as wearing ballet shoes and the correct leotard and tights, and this also encourages good routine and discipline in presenting themselves correctly.

Social development – Dance is a very sociable hobby. Children have to interact with other children in the class usually through a set of activities, and this encourages good teamwork and co-operation as well as the ability to work independently.

Creativity and artistic development – Dance encourages spontaneity and freedom of expression through role play and choreography. Young kids love pretend play and older kids enjoy creating routines and putting on their own show. Being part of a performance, with new costumes and ballet shoes, is exciting as well as being important in developing confidence and poise in your child.

Dance is a fantastic all-round activity that has these and many other benefits. Above all, it’s really fun, so get enrolling your kids into classes right now!
