More often, baby acquires pneumonia easily than adults do. As a sort of information, pneumonia is simply the inflammation of parenchymal tissue which can only be found in the lungs of a person. The inflammation will lead to a more severe infection if not treated immediately and is very dangerous especially for babies.
For persons who do not have medical knowledge, it would be difficult to sight whether a baby has pneumonia or not. On the part of the doctors, they would also need to conduct a full and complete anamnesis or a medical interview with the patients who are suspected to have pneumonia. However, it would be harder to diagnose babies as they are not able to talk and express what they really feel in their bodies. Thus, the parents are the ones who will be interviewed regarding such concern. But oftentimes, an x-ray on the chest will be done to confirm if neonates, or newly born babies have inflammation on the lungs or infection.
Age is also an important factor to diagnose pneumonia. In the case of the newborn babies, pneumonia is often transmitted from the mother, and such would lead to the conclusion that such illness is caused by any of the following: listeria monocytogenes, streptococcus B and escherichia coli. More often than not, babies from 3 weeks to 4 months develop pneumonia due to streptococcus pneumoniae. However, babies from 5 months up to 4 years can acquire the illness because of respiratory syncytial virus or RSV.
Just like other baby illnesses, it would be better to know if your baby has pneumonia by simply learning the signs and symptoms. Doctors, also, depend on the signs and symptoms when diagnosing babies. So, here are some signs which can really help you determine the health of your baby;
- Unusual Fever — fever are usually normal for babies especially if their bodies are still adjusting to the vaccines and other environmental factors. Mothers would be able to tell when the fever is unusual; if the baby has a fever long enough. Be vigilant enough when your babies have abnormal behaviors and reactions especially if they are having fever.
- Cyanosis — literally, the baby become bluish especially on the face area and much more on the lips. This sign could be a symptom of pneumonia or other respiratory problems.
- Heavy and Rapid Breathing — babies’ breath are soft and gentle especially when they are sleeping. However, should encounter that you babies are heavily breathing or even rapid, consult your doctor immediately as that would be a sign of respiratory problems, specifically pneumonia.
- Dry Cough — when your babies cough like there is something inside trying to block the airway, then you should not waste your time trying to diagnose your babies on your own. It might be too late for them.
- Retracted chest — a baby who cannot breathe easily may have a retracted chest wall. Such is also a manifestation of pneumonia and respiratory distress.
Pneumonia is a deadly illness especially for babies because it involves the deterioration of the lungs and other respiratory organs. Remember, a person cannot live without air even for a single minute. So, should you see your baby having any of the signs of pneumonia and respiratory problems, consult your doctor immediately.
