Understanding Baby Behavior — Newborn to 12-Months Babies

One of the most intense developmental growths in babies transpires in the first year of their existence. This is not only exclusive to the physical aspects but also encompasses the baby’s behavioral pattern. A little baby’s behavior is yet unpredictable. Such is especially true to babies during the first few months from birth to one year. Such pattern will continue to change in the later years, thereby requiring each parent to do their best in understanding baby behavior as much as possible.

The following are few of the most common behavioral alterations that transpire in newborn babies to their 1st year.

Baby sleeping patterns

Sleeping is inevitable to little babies, especially the newborns. Babies or infants can and will sleep each day with 20 hours total, in one-to-three-hour courses. Then they will be awaken for feeding and later after noshed, sleep again. It is during this stage when both parents, especially the mothers feel the pressure as they need to adjust on their newborn’s sleeping pattern, too. Mothers on the other hand, will have to wake up from time to time, to feed their babies, usually every after two-hour interval.

It is also during the first weeks and months, babies tend to be awaken or active at night and fall to sleep during daytime. But these sleeping patterns will eventually changes as they mature. As their brains develop, they too discover certain ways to retort to light indication. And so when they reach four months, they started to sleep all through the night.

Twelve to fourteen hours of daily sleep is needed for one-year old babies. This would include one-two daytime naps plus the sleeping hours at night.

Initial Behavioral changes

When a baby reaches 6 months onwards, he eventually learns to respond slowly. During this time, both his intellectual and physical changes are becoming more apparent. They will learn to mimic basic baby gestures. As the baby’s age increments his physical, intellectual and emotional skills also augment, respectively. A need for guidance, love and care should then be fulfilled by parents.

Changes that occur in little babies are indeed, rapid. Their everyday behavior seems to be unforeseen. This makes parenting very much challenging to both novice and experienced parents. They too have to cope with the changes as such with the behavioral patterns their babies undergo. Moreover, parents should then be responsive to their babies’ needs in certain phase of their child’s growth and development.
