Tips And Suggestions For Finding A Good Daycare Center

Finding a good daycare center is one of the most stressful events parents and children go through. There are several things to consider when searching for the best daycare for your child. It can sometimes become overwhelming trying to find a place where you and your child are comfortable, but the good news is there are several tips that will help the search go much smoother.

Investigation and Research

You will have to shop around and do some investigating prior to visiting your choices. The best way to get recommendations is through friends and family that have children in childcare centers. If you are new to an area or do not know anyone with children, start by searching through the yellow pages or internet for daycare centers that are near your home or your place of business.

Choose at least five possible candidates and contact the Department of Early Learning for your state. The company will be able to provide you with any information that has been received about the daycare center pertaining to complaints. If any center on your list has complaints, regardless of how minor, cross them off the list. Every state has a rating system that is used for daycare centers based on various criteria such as education programs, security, cleanliness and adult to child ratio. When contacting the county office, it is important to ask about the daycare ratings as well.

Visits, Questioning, and Taking Notes

Keep in mind that all information you receive from the county office is only a referral, not a recommendation. You will have to visit the childcare centers you are considering to make a final determination. Visit each center you have on your list, even if the first place seems like the perfect solution. Make a list of questions to take with you on your visits and take notes while you are visiting the centers. Ask questions such as what a typical day is like for the children, what education level does the staff have and do not hesitate to ask them for referrals.

While on the tour, take notes of things such as the environment, the cleanliness, the space available, are dangerous items out of reach, are there a variety of toys of different ages, are there books present and how many children are with each adult. Keep in mind that the fewer children per group to each adult means your child will receive more attention than in a busy environment with few adults. Take note of the children’s behaviors. For example, notice how the children are interacting with adults and if the children seem to be happy at the center.

Making your Decision

After touring several centers, review your notes carefully. Think back to how the children behaved at each center and whether the environment appeared to be happy or simply a place for children to congregate while their parents are work. It is important to take your child with you, especially if they are old enough to talk about how they feel about each place you visit. Take notice on whether your child is anxious to go play with the other children or if he prefers to stay near you.

Although it is recommended that you make an appointment for your first visit, it is sometimes helpful to pop in unannounced for your second visit. Most childcare centers frown upon unexpected visits, however, if the center seems happy to see you and willing to show you around again, they most likely were not pretending to be the best daycare when you visited the first time.

Finding a good daycare center does require a great deal of work, however, if you take your time and visit several centers you will find a place where your children will be happy to go and you will feel confident in their safety.

It is so difficult for many parents to feel comfortable leaving their very young children (especially infants) in the care of others. Finding the right daycare for your child is of utmost importance for your child’s health and happiness and also for your peace of mind.

Following these steps will certainly help get you there. Don’t feel uncertain about asking questions and pay close attention to how you and your child feel when you are at the daycare. Don’t ever feel bad about not choosing a daycare just because you don’t “like” it. Do your research and listen to your feelings.
