The normalcy of baby crying

It is absolutely normal for a baby to cry. This is most expected especially during the first 3-4 months of his life. The frequency of crying periods normally increase but it generally varies within a single day depending on the situation and his need.

There are people who think that a baby cries more often during the afternoon or evening when parents are normally returning from work–when dad is pretty stressed out from work or mom is anxious to go and see him for the rest of the night. A widely accepted theory however, albeit  without the benefit of scientific research, is that babies have automated system of discerning which noise can cause reaction from them thus depriving them of much needed rest. They have this screening ability to ignore noises that can cause disruption in their sleep rhythm. Over time, this filter fades and a baby can become sensitive to the noise around him. This normally happens around six weeks and it is during this time that a baby may cry even due to a soft rustle of leaves.  A baby also becomes overly sensitive to movements and he reacts to it by crying.

Aside from this widely acceptable assumption, there are countless mysteries to the possible causes of crying in a baby. It is helpful for parents to help understand why their precious little sonny is crying.

Boredom

Yes, you read it correctly. Your baby, even at this early stage in life can become bored as you are. They need stimulation and movement. There are babies that love to be walked around. Some of them prefer to play. Others love being touched and massaged.  Sensual simulation is also a healthy way to determine the alertness of the infant. Playing something in front of the eyes may elicit immediate reflexes that are telltale of an alert, healthy baby. Other babies love music even at such tender age. It generally varies but the most important thing is that a baby needs to be stimulated. Crying for them is one way of telling the people around them that he is in a boring world. Help your baby enjoy life.

Hunger

This is basic. This is normally the most immediate cause why your baby is crying. A baby normally does the crying during regular intervals thus giving a hint to the parents what he needs.

Discomfort

A baby also cries when in a not-so-comfortable situation. This can be tricky. A parent may wonder for a moment what the real cause of the problem especially if the baby was just given his milk a while ago. It may be a wet diaper, overheating from tight-fitting clothes, too low room temperature, etc. The baby may also be in pain or may be in an uncomfortable lying position.

A parent has to be sensitive to the surroundings of the baby. They should be able to perceive ahead of time the needs of their infant to better minimize disturbance from their baby’s crying.
