The Meaning of Japanese Baby Names

Japanese baby names were mostly written in kanji (Japanese picture writing.) There are thousands of kanji names to choose from, although you can write the same Japanese name in different kanji combination. Sometimes Japanese names are also written in hiragana or katakana – Hiragana usually used for Japanese girl’s name.

It is hard to tell any one who ask what is the meaning of Japanese baby names, especially with out knowing the character(s) used in kanji to spell the names. For example, the “Keiko” name, there are more than 70 variations are present to write the name “Keiko” in kanji, it depends on what character you use, and the meanings may differ. Like the word, “Ko” it is usually written at the end of the name of Japanese baby girls’ names, which means “a child”.

Naming your child with Japanese Baby Names

From kanji character, some parents wish to name their baby after their names or from any of their relatives, they choose and use one of the kanji character in their baby’s name instead of giving them the same full name. Like for example, from popular kanji characters for the names, “dai” (means big), “ta” (means great) for the boys name and “mi”(means beauty), “yuu”(means gentle) for the girls.

Parents can also name their baby after some historical person, or even heroes and celebrities. Others also believe from fortune telling, that every number of strokes used in the first name must be compatible to the last. However, there are usually different styles of fortune telling for naming.

You can choose from images, like the image of nature (Oceans, mountains, hills and etc.) You can also choose from beautiful colors, arts or even jewel.

For female baby names –~a, ~chi, ~e, ~ho, ~i, ~ka, ~ki, ~ko, ~mi, ~na, ~no, ~o, ~ri, ~sa, ~ya, ~yo, etc.

    Something I have noticed recently about Japanese girl names is that use of “ko” as a suffix is decreasing. I think the young generation of parents see ko as kind of old fashioned these days.
