These days many people do not like to discipline their children because they feel that they were told off too much as children, some even think that it is cruel or it reduces a child’s confidence. It is important to not over discipline, tell them off to aggressively or too often when they have not been wrong but to not discipline at all can also be a problem. The best thing is to come up with a set of rules when they are babies and then stick to them. Think about what they are allowed to touch and not touch, where they are allowed to go and not go and things they are not allowed to say.

These basic rules can be added to when they get older. By having a set of rules, a child will feel safe, knowing where they fit in to the family and what they can and can’t do. By explaining to them the reasons for setting these rules they will understand why they are important and they will know that it is for their benefit. Punishment should not be physical, by warning them once that if they do a naughty thing again they will be punished then sending them to stand in the corner or sit on a step for the amount of minutes as they are old, then they will have consistent punishment and know what to expect if they are naughty.
