We always beam proud when our child can count from one to ten. We take the extra effort to teach him the alphabet as early as possible. Children who can count and read at an early age are monickered geniuses.
The emphasis of the child’s development has always been: reading, writing and arithmetic. Some years back, however, Western pundits realized that physical development is just as important as mental development at the early stage of a child’s life. It was concluded that there is a correlation between physical adeptness and mental intelligence.
By physical development, we mean enhancing his motor skills, allowing the child to use his hands and feet; giving him toys that enable his eyes and his hands to coordinate.
That is why being able to catch a ball at an early age is more than just play. It’s a way of developing your child’s brains too. The body has to develop first before learning comes.
With the child still in the womb, a mother can contribute to its development by eating well and generally taking care of herself.
At birth, parents can help in the development by constantly touching and holding the baby. Studies have shown that institutionalized babies are physically weaker than those who were constantly touched and carried.
Physical touch is most important. It is an act of communication of love. If a child does not feel any touch, he does not feel loved. That’s why kids love to be carried even when the have grown up.
At toddlerhood, the importance of physical play has not been emphasized enough.
Most parents would read a book to the child regularly but few would complement this with moving with music or singing with action. Being able to dance to the rhythm of a music or being able to jump and land properly can do wonders to a child’s brain development.
A child learns through play. You sometimes tell them what to do. There is explanation. There is trial and error.
So next time your child tells you he can now tie his shoes, beam as proud as when he tells you he can count from 1 to 100.
