Significant Information about Croup and Its Effect on Babies

Brief Overview

Croup is a common ailment affecting babies at the age 6 months to 3 years old. This illness is indicated by the inflammation of voice box (larynx) and windpipe (trachea). It is usually caused by allergies, bacteria or any inhaled substance from grimy air. Most babies can accumulate croup in the months of October and March. Some cases of croup are not that serious though, but there are also some that entail hospitalization due to severity.

How will you know if your baby has a croup infection?

You can easily identify if your baby has croup by just listening on to his voice. If his voice sounds like a barking seal or deep cough, then that is a potential croup. You may also bring your baby to his doctor for further check-up. Or you may also attempt to put your baby on the phone and let his doctor listen to his voice. By doing so, the doctor can get an idea as to what your baby is suffering from, basing on what he has heard from your child’s voice.

The accumulation of croup can begin from cold symptoms that may get worse during nighttime. If neglected, it is possible that your baby may suffer from breathing distress. Thus, it should be given prompt and proper treatment. Nowadays there are already available anti-croup vaccines to protect babies, though.

How to treat babies have croups?

Mild cases of croups can be treated at home by taking your baby into a damp bathroom for about 15 to 20 minutes. This will make his body warm and will aid him to breathe easily. If your bathroom is not warm enough, you can also utilize a humidifier to help preserve the room temperature for your baby. But be sure to note that the humidifier should be always clean. You can use bleach and water to get those molds and bacteria that are hiding in your humidifier. Always make sure your baby will not be dehydrated too. It is also possible that your baby may be dehydrated due to the fact that by having humid temperature, he could sweat more.

Is this ailment recurrent?

Yes, there is a possibility that your baby will suffer from croup again. If this happens the second time, your baby needs a home therapy and you also need to call the doctor to check his condition.
