The most important decision I made, when raising my children was to have respect for them. I see too many parents who do not answer their child’s questions or put themselves first. You decided to bring a child in to the world and they deserve to be treated well by you. Of course you have to have a balance and make sure that you have time for yourself and that they are well disciplined but if they need things then it is important that you respond. Obviously you do not need to give in to their every demand, but it is important to explain to them why you cannot give them every thing that they need or every minute of your time. Even as babies it is important to start explaining things to them and they will learn by your tone of voice that you are explaining things and they will feel the respect from you.
They will begin to understand why you make certain decisions with regards to their care and a mutual respect should easily form between you. Remember to look after your own needs too though, as you need to look after yourself so that you are fit to look after the children.
