Resolving the Character Dilemma of a Child

In childhood, change is constant. It is in the child’s nature to go through such transformation in the different phases of their growth process. One of these alterations is the conversion of their behavior. Typically, there are no bad children. What’s good or bad only pertains to their manners. The rationale of their being “dire” is just because of the fact that they are having some difficulties adjusting to the changes they undertake. Bad behavior is just a natural reaction to the brisk growth and development. 

Hence, parents should support their children, especially in times like this. Parents must do something to help their child deal with this challenge. 

What should parents do to help their children overcome such dilemma?

A. Essential Preparation 

Considered the foremost key to achieve success in parenting is through planning. Preparation prior to taking the plunge in parenthood certainly makes it easier for parents to do the right thing in terms of decision making for their children in the future. 

When you plan, you’ve set your expectations, make assumptions to the possible problems and come up with the most appropriate solutions ahead. Common expectation is for your children to encompass good behavior as they grow. In parenthood, preparation would mean planning for the worse. What if your child accumulates bad behavior during the transition and adjustment period? Primed parents already have an answer to this question. 

In planning, parents should identify the child’s skills and personality. This would lead you to finding the best approach to resolve your child’s future behavior issue. Parents should exploit direct instructions, guidance and practice opportunities to inculcate appropriate skills your child can utilize in dealing with the behavior challenges ahead. 

B. Parent-Child Relationship 

As much as possible, establish a strong bond between you and your child. It would make it easier for your child to overcome behavior dilemma during transition. A constant affectionate relationship would lead to a strong social maturity of the child. Parents can boost their relationship with their child by listening to him, playing with him, educating him what’s right and wrong, and most importantly showing him you love him. Playing games and laughing with your child would strengthen the bond. The stronger the bond you have with your child, the bigger the opportunity for you to influence his values and skills. 

C. Appropriate Response 

One good way of showing attention to your child is responding to what they say and what they do. As much as possible, take action in everything they say or do, especially if it is no longer appropriate. If your child commits mistake, appropriately act in retort. Consequence is not always necessary but for your child to learn from their mistakes, do some positive reinforcement. The fortification should vary on your child’s skills and personality. Even a mere word from you can shape your child’s behavior, optimistically.
