Preparing for Birth – Labor and Delivery
Preparing for Birth – Labor and Delivery. Okay, the big day is approaching and you are excited and nervous. What can you do about your nervousness?
• Learn more about what to expect. This will help you minimize fear of the unknown in your Labor and delivery day.
• Take a childbirth preparation class. You will learn how to use relaxation and distraction to assist you during labor. You need to practice these techniques regularly with your partner.
• Take an pregnancy exercise class. You can continue to help your body prepare for this major physical event by keeping it moving. If you haven’t taken any classes during your pregnancy, try an exercise class specifically geared to pregnant women, such as yoga for pregnancy.
• Use positive visualization. Practice imagining the successful birth of your child. Being able to imagine it happening will help you relax and focus during the real event.
Vaginal Birth After Cesarean Delivery
There’s one more thing some of you will have to decide before your labor and delivery. If you’ve given birth before, it may have been by cesarean delivery. In many cases, you can try to have vaginal delivery with your current pregnancy. Reasons to want vaginal birth after cesarean delivery, or VBAC, include avoiding the risks of major surgery, having a shorter recovery time, and avoiding the risk of infection, or you may just want to experience a vaginal birth.
You may not be able to attempt VBAC. Your doctor or midwife will look at the medical records of your cesarean delivery to determine if you can. Talk to them about your options and about the risks and benefits.
