Pregnancy and Weight gain
When you get pregnant the elderly people advice you to take food for two. And this is the time, you will be stuffed with all kinds of savories which makes you put on weight like anything. This will cause post partum (after delivery) over weight, and many woman generally develop a tummy which they find very difficult to get rid of later. They have to live with that weight all through out their life.
How much weight should be gained?
Weight gain depends on many factors like your pre pregnancy weight, body type etc. To start with an underweight person may gain more during the first three months and a person who is overweight already may remain the same. Some times those people who start eating a more healthy diet may find themselves losing a bit, though losing weight constantly is not a good idea during pregnancy. It is still a debatable question how much weight you should gain during pregnancy? One thing you should accept is what ever it is, you are going to gain weight during pregnancy. This extra weight comes from different factors.
Factors
The weight of the baby comes first; it may be around 2500 – 3000 gm. Then the uterus gains weight during pregnancy because it is providing an extra layer in its wall for the baby and it weighs around 900 gm. The placenta is another element which increases the weight, it provides nourishment for the baby and also acts a protective sheath, and it weighs around 600 gm. During pregnancy your breasts enlarges in its preparation to provide food for the baby and it weighs around 400 gm more. You will gain some fat during the pregnancy as a preparation to provide you with more energy for breast feeding that will count to at least 2500 gm more. Altogether, an average of 11000 gm will be added to your total weight during pregnancy. But your ideal weight during pregnancy will depend on how much you weighed before pregnancy. Too much weight gain during pregnancy may lead to many problems like gestational diabetics, high blood pressure which makes labor difficult.
So the ideal weight should be maintained by taking suitable diet with the advice from your obstetrician. You should find out what type of diet is suitable for you depending on your weight gain pattern. A study carried out by the American Association Cancer Research, showed that women who gained a lot of weight during their pregnancy, are at the risk of breast cancer after their menopause. It is highly advisable that women should be very cautious about their weight gain during their pregnancy and should take regular exercise.
