Pre-Pregnancy RECOMMENDATIONS

Practices which are recognized as effective are prophylaxis of neural tube defects (NTD) with folinate.

Dosage

* Women at high risk (history of pregnancy with NTD) wishing to become pregnant: 4 mg / day of folic acid, 1 to 3 months before conception and during the first 3 months of pregnancy
* Women with low risk (no history of pregnancy with NTD) wishing to become pregnant: 0.4 to 0.8 mg of folic acid, 1 to 3 months before conception and during the first 3 months of pregnancy
* Women of childbearing age with the possibility of unplanned pregnancy: 0.4 mg of folic acid daily
* Women who may become pregnant or plan to, as an alternative to the ingestion of folic acid supplements: increasing the daily consumption of folinate to 0.4 mg / day

We recommend the administration of folic acid in the form of plain, and not as part of multivitamin preparations. Supplement with folinic acid and calcium folinate offers no advantage over folic acid, except in women who are treated with anti-folinates like metrotexate or trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and when the mouth is impossible.
