Potential Risks to Babies during Pregnancy

Every expectant mother is typically very enthused to bring in a new life from inside her womb. Along with this enthusiasm is the natural motherly instinct to care for her baby. Mixed emotions are then experienced on their baby’s welfare. Mood and feeling alterations from paranoia to euphoria are typical occurrences due to motherly hormones.

Along with these changes, feelings and experience variations, pregnancy is yet a very sensitive phase in life, both for the mother and the conceived infant. During these instance both of the mother’s and the baby’s immune systems are weak, which makes them more likely to develop any kind of sickness and infections.

The Rationale

When a woman conceived, the body would consider the growing fetus as a strange matter, which is eventually accepted. The body accepts this ‘strange matter’ by reducing its immunity level.

Normally, an active immune system of the body identifies strange objects and eventually assaults them. But when this strange matter is determined by the system as a fetus, immuno-suppression usually plays its function. This immuno-suppressant is very important during pregnancy as it denotes a natural self-weakening process of the body’s immune system as the body’s recognition of the fetus inside. However, the effects of this immunosuppression could also make both the mother and the fetus more prone to accumulate diseases and infections.

Common mother-to-baby infections

Among the most common infection occurring to both the mother and the fetus during pregnancy are manifested by congenital infections. These infections are known to traverse the placenta to taint the fetus inside. Congenital infections are usually elicited by disease-causing microbes, which give way to the progression of fetal problems and worse, death. These are common infections passed in the utero. Common congenital infections include toxoplasmosis, rubella, herpes simplex virus and cytomegalovirus.

Aside from congenital, perinatal is yet another pregnancy infection that takes place during labor and delivery. It transpires when the baby moves along the birth canal that is infected. Fecal objects during delivery are potential triggers to perinatal infections in babies. Infections would encompass herpes simplex virus, gonorrhea, chlamydia, genital warts, and group B streptococci or GBS.

These are just two of the most commonly transpiring infections to both the mother and the baby. This then calls every mother’s attention to take care especially during pregnancy as she and her baby are both at risk to accrue any of the potential risks in pregnancy.
