Introduce Your Kids to Art

I was browsing the books in the children’s room at the local library when I came upon the book Look! Look! Look! by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace. What an amazing way to introduce your children to new art terminology as well as HOW to look at art.

The premise is that a little family of mice happen upon a postcard that has been mailed to the owners of the house where they live. On the postcard is a reproduction of the painting Portrait of a Woman by Robert Peake. The mice are enthralled.

They use little frames to focus in one small pieces of the painting, so they can better see the details. They point out the patterns, colors, lines, and shapes within the painting. They make their own versions of the painting and then move onto create their own art.

In the back of the book is a simple glossary of terms. There is even a mini-lesson that walks children through how to create a self portrait postcard.

I love reading to my kid and I really find it fulfilling when I find a book that is so innately instructional to its core, while still maintaining a simple, fun storyline that grabs a child’s attention. I was able to use Look! Look! Look! to show my kid how you can look at things not only as a whole, but also in small parts. I showed her how to see similarities between parts of a picture and real life. We talked about how one person may see something one way, while another person sees it another.

Every moment can be a teaching moment. Books like this make those moments even more significant.
