Babies love sleeping. If your baby can talk, telling you how much he enjoys sleeping would be the first thing he will say to you. Sleeping is a necessary activity for a developing baby especially during the first months of his life. This need however, does not come without complications. One of them is SIDS or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Although this case happens rarely for a large majority of infants, it can potentially happen to any baby. The need for a safe sleeping habit and practice can help prevent this unfortunate disease to happen though.
SIDS happens to many babies annually. It is however, proven that safe sleeping habits can best reduce the chance of this sickness from happening. The first thing you have to do is to observe how your baby is being put to sleep in the hospital. For home setting, a ready crib surely helps. It must be thoroughly inspected for any potential objects that might harm the baby.
Making sure that the crib is safe for a baby means placing it in a draft-free area. Putting a comfortable and firm mattress normally made of cotton would be the next step. After laying down the baby, effort should be exerted to make him lie on his back at all times to avoid the risk of suffocation.
During cold weather, it is advisable to wrap the baby in layers of clothes. Room temperature should be kept to an ideal 68 degrees. Care must be done to make the baby as comfortable as you are. Don’t dress the baby too warmly for the obvious reason of overheating him. Fitting night clothes is more preferable than loose ones. Avoid putting excess objects like jewelry, toys, caps, etc. It is not also recommended to put stuffed toys near a baby when he is sleeping. This increases the risk of making the baby sick from contaminated objects and from being suffocated.
Also, avoid sleeping with the baby on your own bed. There is a possibility that a baby may roll over and fall to the sides or suffocate due to your thick blankets. If visiting friends or relatives, be sure to bring the babies playpen or crib. Planning ahead pays. You can just never be safer when it comes to your baby. Bearing these tips in mind may not only save you your precious gift’s life but will also save you unnecessary hassles.
