Technology has advanced considerably in the past decade which made it possible for the doctors to detect if a newborn baby is impaired with the sense of hearing. Although, the tests may be repeated to know the seriousness of the impairment, such technology is just a great help for the parents to know more about their babies. The good thing about knowing the hearing impairment earlier is so that proper treatment will be started before it gets worst. 

As a mother, you should know that the development of the fetus inside your womb will be affected by the kinds of medications you were taking up during your pregnancy period up until giving birth. Thus, babies who have been exposed to antibiotics will more likely to have hearing impairment than those who have not. Some of the signs are physical abnormalities at birth, lighter in weight than normal newborn babies, illnesses of either mother or the baby and damages to the skulls or other senses. 

Here are also some ways on how to determine if your baby has a good sense of hearing; 

• The baby gets startled if a loud sound is present but does react with low intensity sounds. That means that the hearing is good.
• When your baby looks for you when you speak. It happens when the baby is three months old and up. Usually, he will exhibit calmness upon hearing your voice or sleep when you sing.
• If your baby coos or even babbles as if he tries to talk, it means that he is trying to imitate sound he heard. You can also play games and let him hear other sounds and voices.
• When the baby reacts to strange sounds and voices, everything is fine with his hearing. 

However, if things go out of hand and you seem pretty sure that your baby is impaired with hearing, do not lose hope as there are other alternatives to be done to give your baby a normal life despite of his impairment.

One of the options you have is the cochlear implants which usually have positive results and could give normal sense of hearing to those who are impaired. Aside from that, hearing aids are also very helpful. In fact, more of the impaired people tend to use these hearing aids as there are not much of worries and complicated operations. The good thing about these aids is that they have become so compact that they can be hidden easily. 

In a nutshell, if you have the chance to know if your baby has hearing impairment, it is good to know it earlier to be given proper remedies and medication to avoid complications. But should the impairment manifests at the later stage of your baby’s life, contact your doctor immediately and look for alternatives to give your baby a better life and brighter future despite of the hearing impairment.
