How to Save on Baby Expenses
Having a baby changes a family budget instantaneously. Though a newborn does not impact your grocery budget right off the bat, additional costs associated with having a baby can be financially taxing. Using some cost-cutting, sensible methods, you can enjoy both your beefed up savings account and your new bundle of joy!
1. Formula
If your baby needs to be formula-fed, this can really impact expenses for the entire family, as formula is a costly necessity. One of the best ways to save money on baby formula is to shop at bulk warehouses, where bulk-buying translates to savings. If you are not sure whether you need as much formula as comes in a typical case, find a friend, colleague or family member to split the case and cost! You’ll both save money. One optional cost-saving measure is to use store brand formula as opposed to pricier, brand-name formula. The ingredients are the same and you’ll save big money!
2. Diapers
Diapers come and go faster than the speed of light. Though you cannot simply cut diapers out of the equation, finding ways to save on diapers will impact your household budget in a positive way. One option is to use generic diapers, such as those offered by baby stores, bulk warehouses or even drug stores. The alternative option (and the one which saves the most money), is to use cloth diapers and wash the diapers by hand or in a washing machine. This allows you to continually reuse cloth diapers and save on the high cost of disposable diapers.
3. Baby Wipes
Baby wipes are a costly and disposable item used to cleanse the bottom of babies between changes. Though the soft and pre-moistened cloths are convenient, they can add up to a huge burden, because you need to clean a baby multiple times a day. A cost-saving option is to use white washcloths, made wet with lukewarm tap water. Washcloths can be laundered and reused over and over again.
4. Baby Food
Once a baby begins eating baby food, the costly little jars in the grocery store can add up! The majority of starter foods are simple, with one ingredient being pureed to get babies accustomed to adding new foods to their diet. You can make your own baby food for much less at home. One of the most cost effective ways is to puree cooked vegetables made for the rest of the family’s dinner. A few passes through a food processor, blender or even grinder can mash up the cooked vegetables to a consistency rivaling any store-bought baby food. This process can be used even as babies move through different stages of food, using different ingredients pulled right from the family dinner table such as cooked chicken, beef, pasta, fruit and even oatmeal.
