How to Introduce a Feeding Bottle to your Baby

Breast milk is still best for babies even up to 2 years. Thus, it is always advisable that you feed your baby with natural or breast milk. However, not all babies are able to do so; others are just not allowed to feed from their mothers to avoid the sickness which the mother has, or the baby will just refuse in feeding from her.

In cases like your baby is used to breast feeding it would be very difficult to let him/her feed with the use of baby bottles. However, it is advisable for mothers who are planning to introduce a new way of feeding their babies to do so when the baby is about 2 to 3 weeks. This will enable the baby to get used to the new nipple. I am not saying that you will have to depend on feeding him/her with feeding bottles, you just have to use it once a day until such time that you really have to let him/her use it for good.

However, the best a mother can do is to make sure if the baby is well-feeding through natural milk first. This is to make sure that the baby has a good appetite. Then, let the try on the new nipple to see if he/she can notice the change. More often, he/she will decline it but you have to at least try doing so until such time the baby accepts it.

Here are some tips on how to prepare and introduce the feeding bottle to your baby;

#1. Prepare the baby bottle beforehand. Be sure to have the baby formula prepared thirty minutes before you will serve it to your baby. The probability of rejection is slim enough if the bottle is already colder for the baby to accept than warm upon serving.

#2. Clean the Teats thoroughly. If you do not know, nipples and teats can be a perfect hideout of germs and bacteria, you better pour generous amount of hot water before using it for your baby.

#3. Find a place to sit comfortably. This is for both your baby and you. Look for a place where you can relax so that it would be easier for your to hold your baby while feeding.

#4. Position the baby in your arms properly. Your baby’s head must always be a bit higher than the rest of his/her body. Be sure to observer proper positioning to avoid vomiting and milk spitting.

#5. Give the nipple to you baby gently. You must let the baby feel the gentleness of your care when feeding him/her by gently giving the nipple and putting it in the center of his/her tongue.

#6. Talk or Sing for your baby. Babies always love to be talked to or sing at, thus, it is a good idea to practice your vocal chords whenever you are feeding. This will make the baby easily fall asleep.

#7. If you have just introduced the baby bottle to him/her, then he/she must be slow to feed at first. But that’s okay, stay patient and focused on your baby. Babies need to adjust to the new method of feeding just like adults.

#8. Let the Baby Burp Frequently. Baby bottles would to tend to let babies take more air and for gases in your baby’s stomach. Letting him/her burp more often would save your baby from further discomforts and total satisfaction.

One Important Tip:

When choosing a feeding bottle for your baby, be sure to choose the ones which are free from Bisphenol A (BPA). There are some hormonal reactions when babies would be able to take plenty of BPA from plastic baby bottles. For you to be guided accordingly, choose from the list of BPA-Free baby bottles and teats.
