How Could My Baby Get Acne?

Only a few have known that babies can also develop acne during their first few months from birth.

Yes, baby acne is possible to be acquired by your baby. In fact, it is very common for newborn babies; it can even be seen at birth. However, baby acne usually shows up after a week or two since birth. And just like acne found in the adults, baby acne grows in the cheeks, forehead, neck, and chin and even at the back. This shows that it is one of the most common kinds of acne which any skin can acquire.

Baby acne can be caused by milk which your baby oftentimes spit up, irritation from saliva acquired when someone or you kiss your baby, and irritation caused by rough fabric or those which are washed in very strong detergent. It should be remembered that your baby’s skin is yet very sensitive that exposure to foreign objects and substances will certainly cause reactions. Commonly, this kind of acne will be manifested by little whiteheads characterized by reddish skin which surrounds it.

More people believe that baby acne is acquired through genetic factors. Though, it could be another reason, but studies assert that when a mother takes medication during pregnancy, most likely, it is the cause of acne in her baby. It is because certain medications may trigger the hormonal imbalance even at the early stage of your baby’s life. But it is not only that, it can also be triggered by medication taken by the mother even after birth especially if she nurses and feeds her baby from her breast.

Usually, those blemishes on your baby’s skin will last two weeks and even for two months. However, should it stay there after three months, you must consult your doctor about it to make sure that it is not something else. Only doctors can diagnose if it is really acne which can be seen in your baby.

In cases like these, here are the things you should NOT do;

  • Never apply oils and creams on your baby’s skin especially on the spot where acne is present. By doing so will just worsen things and result to much complicated situation.
  • Do not purchase over-the-counter medicines to treat your baby’s acne. Oftentimes, medicines for acne have bad side effects and repercussions.
  • Do not even scrub the acne out of your baby’s skin. Scrubbing will just irritate the skin and would even lead to bruises and wounds or even infection.
  • Never overdo the cleansing process of your baby’s acne. Too much washing will also lead to irritation. It is advisable to use baby soap or those mild ones to cleanse the acne.

If you can see that your baby is not bothered or disturbed by the blemishes, never do a thing to worsen things for baby acne treatment. Leave it as it is because there are times, as part of growing up, that things like acne will start to show up but they are not just the way you see them to be.

In a nutshell, baby acne may not be bad for your baby’s health. What you have to do is to pay attention to it to learn if it is really bothering your baby.
