Home smoke alarms are a common thing in most homes, especially those with children. I will skip the whole speech about making sure your batteries are fresh and your alarms are in working order. I will assume you have already done all of that.

What I want to talk about is one of the newer concepts behind smoke detectors. A clinical study done at Columbus Children’s Hospital shows children will sleep right through a standard alarm if your detector goes off. This is especially true if your alarm tends to go off every time a pot boils over in your kitchen. If you and your family have become accustomed to the sound of the alarm going off in non-emergency situations, then it may become a sound that won’t even penetrate your sleeping mind if it goes off in the middle of the night.

There is a new generation of smoke detectors (home smoke alarms) available from various companies that will allow you to record a personalized message that is played when the smoke detector is triggered. Just imagine being able to program the alarm in your son’s bedroom to say, “Johnny, this is Mommy. Wake up and get ready for our escape plan.” People are more apt to respond to voices they recognize, even their own voices.

In the hospital study, the median time to awaken was 20 seconds for children hearing the voice alarm compared with 3 minutes for the tone alarm. The study used recordings of the mother’s voice, but I feel as though the issue here is the familiar voice more than anything else.

The voice alarms are reasonably priced and most models alternate the voice alarm with a standard tone. I’m shopping for one this weekend and I hope that everyone who reads this will also consider doing the same.
