Conjunctivitis (also known as red eye or pink eye) is an inflammation of the conjunctiva that covers the outer surface of the eyeball and line the inner surface of the eyelid. An infection, a virus, bacteria, or even allergy causes it. In addition, it is contagious and it can be transmitted from person to person.
Some babies suffering from this illness may experience some discomfort due to itchiness or soreness. Giving your baby some warm bath can help ease the discomfort. Other materials cause conjunctivitis, usually from the domestic supplies and environment such as shampoos, soap, or dirt, or even from smoke.
Types of Conjunctivitis You Should Know
Some parents do not know what type of conjunctivitis hit their children. Here are some of the types which can be usually gotten by your child.
Viral conjunctivitis – this kind of conjunctivitis heal on its own, some may disappear after a week or so. As a parent, you must clean gently the eyes of your baby washing them by warm water and getting the dry discharge that are in his eyes. You can use clean cloth to clean the eyes, feeding him may be the good time to clean. However, if you’re baby’s eye will not heal in week or so, consult your doctor to see if there is something wrong.
Bacterial conjunctivitis – this kind of conjunctivitis is almost the same as viral conjunctivitis (they are both contagious.) Doctors will prescribe you an ointment or drops to apply on your baby’s eyes, may be in a week. However, you must always wash your hand before and after applying an ointment or drops, do not apply any old medication that you use in your child it may cause the illness more severe.
Allergic conjunctivitis – If allergic conjunctivitis hit your baby, you must keep him away from any of the substance that can cause him. Also, discover what allergen hit him.
Baby Conjunctivitis Preventions
Since baby conjunctivitis is highly contagious, the best thing to do is to bathe the baby regularly for good hygiene. If your baby has conjunctivitis, you should avoid him/her to touch other people’s face whether to rub their face or even to poke at their eyes. Care should always be taken to avoid infections especially from things you use to the baby such as handkerchiefs, towels, etc.
Here are the ways on how to determine and prevent your baby from having conjunctivitis
- Observing the eye is best thing to do, check for redness or any inflammation; it is essential to detect if the baby has conjunctivitis.
- Check also some tears that bacteria or germs may form
The treatment for this kind of ailment may differ from the cause of the disease and the severity. Seeing an ophthalmologist is an essential way to treat the ailment. This can help so you can determine what caused the conjunctivitis in your baby. Doctors may prescribe some antibiotics, to cure the ailment. However, there are cases that medicines usually cannot heal the sickness, especially if the virus is the cause of the ailment.
