Help Your Kids Become Excited About Reading

In this era of cable television, Internet, and video games, the thought of having your child become excited about reading a book seems a far fetched ideal. In most instances this is probably true but it can be overcome with a proper game plan. It will take a lot of patience to distract your child from all of the fancy lights that are emitted from the flickering screens that surrounds our everyday life but it can be done. The first step to introduce your child into the world of literature is to find out what they are interested in.

Your child’s everyday interest will play a huge part in whether they are willing to go along peacefully into the world of books or they will have to be dragged kicking and screaming. The worst way to introduce a child into the world of books is to think about yourself first. There may have been a book or a certain topic that gave you fond memories as a kid but if your child has shown no previous interest in this topic they will feel forced into reading the book. Feeling forced is never a good feeling to have when being introduced into a new activity. A topic that you pick can come later after they are warmed up on the ideal of reading. Instead a good way to start would be to look at what cartoons or live action shows that your child watches on television. If they play video games more than they watch TV find out what games that they enjoy playing. Usually you will find a children book that is based on the series or at the very least is similar to what your child enjoys. Children respond favorably to a brand that they are familiar with. They will not even hesitate to read a book that is based on their favorite brand of entertainment. Once you introduce the book to them make sure that you read it with them. This will help your child associate reading with getting a positive reaction from you. Once reading is associated with getting attention and a positive response from their parent, then you can go to the next step. Introducing a book that you choose for them to read.

Now that your child finds reading to be a positive experience that you and he/she can share, the next step should be to introduce them to books that are outside the range of their normal television viewing habits. Make sure that the book stays within their zone of interest but maybe a subject that is new to them. A good choice would be to get a topic that is both fun and educational. A good example of this especially for boys would be a book about dinosaurs. Dinosaurs tend to be exciting, so your child will be learning about history as well as having fun all at the same time. When you switch topics you want to make sure that the subject that you chose is not dull. As much as you were able to catch their attention in beginning you will lose it just as fast. Each child is different and you would know more than me what subject would interest your child. Just remember to make sure that it is in their interest and not just yours.

The key point in this article is to make sure that you keep the topic interesting for your child. Everybody has a their own range of interest so you want to be respectfully of your child’s range. At the same time you want to help your child broaden their horizons but remember it can not be forced upon them. When it is time for your child to start school you will see the benefits of introducing them to books early on. They will not dread seeing a thick text book being introduced to them because they do not see reading a book as a boring activity. They will also not have a problem when the teacher assigns them a book report to do because they will already enjoy reading and may even choose to do a report on their favorite book. The television and Internet are fine mediums for information and entertainment but it also important to not let your kids forget about books. A medium that still has thousands of years of information filled on the pages.
