Dehydration Hazards to Babies

Dehydration is a serious threat to human health, especially to babies. Because of this reality, parents should make sure their babies are getting sufficient water intake everyday. This article is intended for everyone, especially parents, to be aware of the potential menace dehydration would cause to little babies.

Overview of Dehydration

Dehydration entails the lack of insufficiency of water (fluids) in the body, as opposed to hydration. If not taken care of immediately, it could lead to fatal body condition and even sudden death. Enough reason for parents not to take dehydration for granted.

Water is essential to the human body to carry on with the metabolic processes. Without or insufficient water may cause hindrance to the body’s metabolism, thereby causing the body to become weak. When the body is weak, diseases are most likely to follow. Fever is the most common.

Dehydration can happen to anyone else, especially in babies. Parents must be sensible during this condition. An immediate solution to dehydration can be obtained by giving your baby with enough water or fluid.

Indications and Causes of Dehydration

How will you know if your baby is dehydrated? Is it possible that a weak baby is dehydrated?

In some cases, it is possible. However, you too must know what really causes your baby to be weak. In fact there are a lot of factors that causing the baby to be frail. If you are certain you failed to give your baby enough water or fluid prior to the instance of him getting weak, then it is possible that your baby is dehydrated.

Dehydration is also caused by some physical symptoms like overheating. This usually happens when your child plays outdoors under the heat of the sun. The more he plays, the more he sweats and the plenty of fluid he lost. This is the reason why you have to give him plenty of water after he plays.

You too should always make sure your child does not have any symptom of ailments like sore throat. This may cause him drinking distress and the possible reason why he won’t or cannot ingest water. You have to take your baby to his pediatrician for immediate cure.

Dehydration Treatment

For younger babies like those in three months, breastfeeding or bottle feeding should be maintained to keep him hydrated. Babies in the age of four months and older should be given with small amount of water, about 4 ounces per day.

If he experiencing some ailments. Better give him small amounts of water typically two teaspoons in every five minutes to help him cope up with his sickness. Do not give him carbonated drinks like sodas, for they could damage teeth. Juices are also fine but do not give him too much. You can dilute it with water, though.

There are available electrolyte liquids that can help your baby from dehydration. The most prominent are Pedialyte, Infalyte and ReVital. You can procure any of these liquids in pharmacies. However, if you notice some serious signs of dehydration from your child, take him to the nearest hospital for him to be given with an appropriate medication, immediately.
