One of the most common issues parents have to face is accepting the baby’s gender. Aside from expecting a healthy baby, most parents have expectations about their desired gender for their baby. This is most apparent in delivery rooms. Parents can sometimes, unintentionally, show dissatisfaction if they’ll find out the opposite of their expectations. Ultrasound results during pre-delivery sometimes are inaccurate. A boy can sometimes take the place of the expected girl or vice versa. Most parents do not consider gender a big deal so long as the baby is healthy. There is however a certain fraction of our population that has gender preferences and hopes and getting an unexpected sex can cause irritation and may be a traumatic happening. If you are one of them, this article can help you cope with this situation.
Be realistic
Accept it. Denying your feeling on the situation cannot help. Be ready to face the situation by acknowledging your frustration, anger, guilt, disappointment, or even depression. To accept the situation, you have to admit your feelings about it. Try to share what you feel to your spouse or a close friend. This will help you diffuse the negative feelings bubbling inside. You can also share your feelings to health care professionals or your doctor. Consulting mental health care specialists can also aid you in coping with what you are feeling. Look for healthy ways to vent out. Psychiatrists would call this catharsis. You may have to punch your pillows or shout yourself out in the open.
Time is the answer
Coping with any negative event means letting time go by. For women, pregnancy and months after giving birth can be an emotional challenge. Women are bound to experience emotional and physical roller coaster during these periods. Sleep deprivation, adjusting to a totally new lifestyle and activities, and erratic hormonal changes can really take their toll. Women are usually victims of depression and disappointment because of these factors. The additional negative feeling in having an unexpected baby can augment them.
Seek help
If you think that it is more than your share of burden, don’t hesitate to call for help. Again, this problem commonly happens to new moms and rarely for new dads. Baby blues symptoms can manifest easily during these periods and having a shoulder to cry on can surely help. This problem will diminish over time though.
Appreciate life
Do not mind the gender. Always think positive. You do not yet know what joys and wonders your precious little gift can give you. Focus on being a good mom and/or dad and enjoy life with your kid.
