It is but an unavoidable circumstance when a little baby encounters electric shock. The rationale behind such incidents to happen is your baby’s innocence as well as curiosity. In times like this, parents should pay much attention with their responsibilities in taking care of their little babies.
Staying calm is necessary if you are witnessing the shock. You need to stay focus and quickly respond by shutting off the main source of the electricity as much as you can. Here are three most important things you should do at first:
- Unplug the cord
- Turn off the circuit breakers
- Remove the fuse from the fuse box
After taking your baby out of the electric current carefully perform the following:
If you see that your baby is still in contact with the electric current, never ever touch him with your bare hands. You too, should not reach into water or any liquid if there is an electric current for you not to be electrocuted.
You can utilize any non-metallic object to break your child’s connection from the current. No-metallic objects usually do not conduct electricity, thereby it is safe to use for such purpose. Common examples of non-metallic materials are wooden brooms and papers such as magazines or newspapers.
When your baby is no longer connected to the current, you have to check his breathing immediately.
What to do if the baby isn’t breathing after the shock?
If in case he is not breathing, do the CPR and ask somebody to contact 911. If you are alone with your child, then you need to offer him CPR for about 2 minutes and then call 911 for emergency.
What else to check if the baby is just breathing fine after the shock?
If you see that your baby is just breathing fine, check his skin. If it seems pale, then you have to contact 911 for emergency. While waiting for help, keep track on your baby’s breathing. If the breathing stops, start applying CPR.
You also need to look for burned skin. Your baby can get a serious burn since his skin is still delicate. A burn caused by electric shock may be deep and painful regardless if it does not look bad outside. You should also note that burns in the lips are hard to notice, so you better check it carefully.
If you see some burned skin on your baby, do not put anything on it especially with ice and ointments. Instead, take your baby to the ER immediately for proper treatment. However, if the burn is just minor, then you should take your baby to his doctor instead.
His doctor will usually check for potential internal damage caused by the shock. Likewise, he will apply appropriate cleaning and cure to the affected area, especially the burned skin. If in case your baby is in experiencing pain, ask the doctor if ibuprofen or acetaminophen is allowed to be offered.
If it is confirmed that your baby suffers from internal organ damage, then lab test is necessary to further monitor his condition. All these and the lab test result would be the basis for your baby’s hospitalization.

I am a grandmother of a 2 year old and a 10 month old. My daughter and son in law leave their cell phone chargers plugged in all of the time. One of them is in an outlet close to the floor. They will not believe me when I tell them that the children can get an electrical shock, especially the 10 month old, who puts everything in her mouth.
