In this day and age being a single mom is no longer an issue. I realized this when I was enrolling my son at school. In the application form, on the field status there is a box to tick for a single parent. Also for divorced. I appreciate this fact that society now acknowledges being a single parent or a single mom as a normal occurrence. Single moms are no longer segregated and boxed in a corner. It is also a pacifying feeling that you know you have chosen a non-discriminating school for your son and you are assured that his values formation will be intact.

Although this may be a simple matter, for me it makes a big difference. Before when I would fill-up forms for my son, it breaks my heart that I have to tick on the box that says illegitimate child. I know it is just for documentation purposes but it still taints my heart. But now upon knowing that our fate is recognized it gives comfort to us that indeed society has matured. I could say that this outcome of modernization in our culture is for the better. It has made people to be open-minded about a lot of things, one of which is on being a single mom.

In parent orientations at school there is a portion where each one of you has to introduce yourselves, I do not hesitate to stand up and proudly introduce myself as a single mom. I believe it is a privilege rather than a shortcoming. Then I feel the glances of my co-parents and instantly I can sense that you look at me with respect.

When I accompany my child to a children’s party and there are games for mothers and fathers I gladly participate in both. I enjoy my dual role. I see my child beaming with happiness. He does not feel incomplete that it is just me and him. He knows very well and understands our situation. He is very much aware that we are still a complete family.

I believe that if the mom accepts and is proud of her civil status in her life, her son sees this and the positive aura flows to him. If the mother is insecure and has a feeling of emptiness due to the lack of a husband then the child absorbs it. He becomes introduced to the void and wallows in it too.

So, if you are single mom, stand-up and be proud of it. You are the modern day Mother Mary. You have been chosen by God to nurture a future savior. He may be an instrument to save the world and he is your savior. He is there to complete your life and make you whole as a human being.
