While you’re making your birth plan, we suggest you look into the philosophies of several childbirth preparation techniques. To be effective, all of these techniques require you to start practicing their methods before the third trimester.

Three of these techniques are ASPO/Lamaze, the Bradley method, and HypnoBirthing. All of them teach you how to be an active participant in your labor, how your body works during labor, and recommend exercises that may decrease the pain and shorten labor. The goal for each of these methods is that you have a personal, natural, and joyful birth experience. We recommend that you explore these Childbirth Preparation techniques to see if you feel they fit your hopes for your birth experience and will make your birth journey easier.

Technique
Make a birth plan by writing down the following preferences, realizing that they are your preferences and if complications occur your baby and your health are the major concern:

• Place of delivery: hospital, birthing center, or home birth

• Professional for prenatal care and delivery: doctor or midwife

• Labor Doula: yes or no

• Childbirth preparation method: ASPO/Lamaze, Bradley, Hypno-Birthing, other

• Prefer pain medication: yes or no

• Prefer vaginal birth after a cesarean section: yes or no

• Prefer not to have an episiotomy: yes or no

• Planning to breast-feed: yes or no

• Do you want your male baby circumcised: yes or no

Note: You may not feel ready to decide on all of these factors. And, as you go through your pregnancy, you may change your mind about your initial preferences. You should always feel you have the right to do so.
