When my child turned one, I wanted a very special favor I could give out to family and friends at the parties we had for him. Yes, I said parties, we had a large group pf family in another part of the state who were unwilling to travel for the party, so we had a huge party here at home for the local people and yet another the following weekend for the family members who would not travel. It was a lot of work, but fun for my daughter.

Anyway, I made decoupage candles as favors.

I bought short pillar candles at a dollar store and then used one of my graphic design programs (you could use Photoshop, Publisher or most any program that allows you to manipulate text and graphics) to design a little two part graphic to use on the candle. Then, I printed that design out in color and took it to a copy store to have color copies made on a thin paper.

I simply cut out each design, applied a layer of ModgePodge (a decoupage medium available at most craft stores) to the back of the pieces of paper and stuck them onto the candle. Once that was dry, I put a total of three layers of ModgePodge over the entire candle, allowing the surface to fully dry between layers. If you want to apply additional layers, it will serve to make the edges of the paper cutouts more flush with your candle, and that is a good thing.

It was a simple craft and it provided me with little heirlooms I still see sitting n the homes of family and fiends to this day.
