Bathing a newborn baby can be a panicky thing for many new Mom’s on their first baby. It’s slippery and the baby is such a fragile thing, and it gets kinda scary when you try to keep hold of the baby and ensure you don’t let it slip through your fingers into the water. But it doesn’t take long for you to be the pro baby bather.

You should wait until the baby’s umbilical cord has fallen off before putting them into any kind of tub. Babies that are circumcised should wait until this area has had time to heal. Up until then, a good sponge bath will suffice.

When you’re moving to a tub, just remember to stay focused and go slowly taking care with each move. You can’t take the chance on the baby getting away from your control. It’s a good idea to unplug the phone and turn off the TV in order to eliminate any distractions. When bathing a newborn baby, please be sure to check the water temperature before putting baby in.

Be prepared for any reaction from your baby. Some babies take right to the water, and others don’t really seem to like it. Don’t panic because the baby cries. But do plan on giving a short and quick bath. The water won’t stay warm all that long, and cold water will make the baby want to cry.

One little trick is to put a nice thick towel that’s been soaked with warm water at the bottom of the tub. It makes a nice warm little cushion for your baby. It also keeps the baby from slipping along the bottom. Be sure to support the neck and head, and speak in soft and soothing tones with reassuring words.

The water should be lukewarm on your baby’s tender skin. The soap and the shampoo should be specially formulated for babies. For the first few weeks, before you know whether or not your baby will have any type of skin allergies, you may want to use only water. To avoid the baby getting chilled, then you’ll want to have a nice dry towel ready immediately upon taking the baby from the tub. Once the baby gets used to bath time, he/she should look forward to these times. Many times they’ll splash around with their hands and giggle while you’re bathing a newborn baby.
