Baby Safety Gates Guide
One of the most inexpensive yet powerful and useful tools in the army of baby safety is the baby safety gate. They can be used to keep children in or out of dangerous areas and can make parenthood a little easier along the way! The older your child gets the more adept they will become at getting into all sorts of trouble around the house and using safety gates as directed and installing them properly can greatly reduce risk of injury. With so many to choose from, it can be a hard decision – but here are the things you should look for no matter what brand or style you buy!
Essentially gates come in two styles. You can buy a pressure mounted or an installed/mounted gate. While both are great – a pressure mounted gate is temporary and should NEVER be used at the top of stairs. Mounted baby safety gates may take a little more time to install and cause a few holes in your walls – but they are generally sturdy and long lasting barrier methods of protection. So how to choose? Take a look at these tips!

The Most Important Factors Your Baby Safety Gate Should Have!
- Ease of opening! Take a deep look at how easy it swings open. The best bet is to find one you can open with one hand. Even pressure mounted gates come with a swing open mode. No parent wants to be tempted to step over a gate with a by in their arms and if it is difficult to open, chances are you will use it less!
- Make sure any gate you use was fabricated after 1985! This is when industry standards changed drastically.
- The slats should be 2 3/8 inches apart to ensure they don’t pose an entrapment risk. Make sure there are no horizontal slats or hardware that can serve as foot holds for a climbing toddler!
- Look for products that are certified. This means they opted for further testing and you will be sure to get a more valuable and safer product. It should have the JPMA or ASTM seal of approval.
- Buy baby safety gates that fit properly into your opening. If you have unusually large openings then find gates that have optional extenders to them. Never be tempted to alter the installation to make them fit.
* Remember that once your baby is 36 inches high, baby gates can easily be scaled! They should not be relied upon for safety after that point.
- Just because you are using a baby gate to barricade the utility room doesn’t mean that hazards and toxins can be kept in there. Always remain vigilant and keep your home baby proofed using gates as a secondary method of keeping a curious baby out!
