Baby proofing your home is essential if you either have a small child at home or have one on the way. I’m putting together a baby proofing home shopping list for you, but in the meantime, I wanted to share one of my more successful forays into baby proofing.

When my baby was born, we lived in a house with a big brick fireplace. In front of the fireplace itself was a large brick platform, about a foot or so high. Obviously, it was hard and had squared off edged. Right away I am sure you are thinking the same thing I though – dangerous for a baby.

In fact, our best friends across the street had the same model house, but with a 5th bedroom. Once, at a kind of boys night in we were having over there, Robin was sitting on the floor in front of his fireplace and leaned back in laughter. He hit his head and although He didn’t need stitches, it bled pretty seriously and hurt for days.

Our solution was to make the fireplace area into additional seating. Most of the year you absolutely do not need to user a fireplace in Florida anyway! We used a couple of bench cushions to cover the surface and big decorative pillows to add a back to the seating area. In the picture here, I just had the seat cushions down.

Guess what? Nobody Ever bumped or scraped while we had the fireplace covered. Not once, even though I didn’t have the corners wrapped in foam like I have seen in some homes. Plus, it added seating for two to three more people when we had big parties.

There are kits you can purchase to wrap the corners of fireplaces. You may feel more comfortable with that approach. In any event, the point is to look out for those hard surfaces and sharp corner, making them baby friendly.So always make sure that you have baby proofing your home for your baby safety.
