Baby, Please Go To Sleep

Tricks to Getting Your Baby to Sleep Better

Lack of sleep.  The one thing that most people forget to mention about having a baby.  And somehow we get thru it and manage to have another kid, or three.  And with each one we learn a little bit more (like to not put baby in bed with us.)

For all you new parents-to-be out there, below are some tricks that worked for me to get my little bundle of joy sleeping better.

1.  Let baby fall asleep on his own.  I know, I know.  It’s really hard not to rock him to sleep.  But I’m not kidding.  It’s the routine of eat, play and then sleep.  Keep him awake after he eats by playing with him and then lay him down awake to put himself to sleep.  This habit will carry well into childhood resulting in a well rested child and mommy.

2. Noise.  Yep.  If you have a house so quiet you could hear a pin drop, your baby will get used to it and not be able to sleep anywhere that is noisy.  It can be as easy as having some light music playing or allowing him to snooze in his bouncer while you do the dishes.  This works well for naps.

3.  Let him have his own space to sleep.  There is nothing harder for a new parent then laying their newborn baby down in a different room and then trying to sleep.  But putting the baby in bed with you will create a dependency for you both that will be incredibly hard to break down the road.  Not to mention it can be a smothering hazard.  If you want your baby close to you, then put a cradle next to your bed and lay him down there.  That way he gets used to having his own space to sleep and you can still have him near you. After a few weeks, transferring him to his crib will be a lot easier.

4. Routine.  Just like all of us, babies need routines too.  It’s a great idea to get your baby on a regular sleep cycle for naps and nighttime.  She’ll get used to going to bed at a certain time everyday and actually will get cranky if she doesn’t.

5. Take care of yourself too.  If you are nursing your baby, have bottles pumped and ready to go.  Ask your significant other to take the 8 pm feeding so you can get a head start on sleep.  And if you are home during the day, take naps with your baby!  You may feel the need to frantically get chores done, bills paid or take a shower, but if you don’t take a little bit of time to catch up on sleep then you’ll have a hard time finishing anything.

Having a baby is a special and life-changing time.  Being prepared means happier times for both of you.  And if you want to send out a sweet and inexpensive announcement, consider a Customized Announcement Magnet.  They are a wonderful way to share your news with loved ones.
