Baby Names: The Most Popular French Baby Names


There’s a lot French Baby names that you see and read in the books, most of these names are somewhat similar to each other. In fact, there are hundreds of French first names which are similar to each other, and there are 200 French first names that is also similar to the English names in spelling and in pronunciation.

Hyphenated French baby names are very common in France. Usually, the first two names are used depending on the gender of the person like Jean-Pierre, Paul-Henri, Anne-Laure and Marie-Elise. These Hyphenated Baby French names are composed of girls name and boys name. However, if baby is a boy the first name among the two should be masculine followed by the feminine name. For example Jean-Marie and Marie-Jacques. Always remember   that hyphenated name are always read as one word. Once there is a French man that is introduced to you like Pierre-Louis, you cannot call him as Pierre or Louis only you need to call his two-word name.

In France lots of masculine names that can be made as feminine names by just adding the suffixes like; -e, -ette or –ine. Always remember that in France, if there is a consonant at the end of the name that is a masculine name and pronounce as silent. In addition, if the end of the name is –e that is a feminine name. Such as Arnaud (silent d) or a masculine name and Arnaude (pronounce d) that is a feminine name. However if you encounter a name that ends with é and the gender is male, it does not mean that you will pronounce as feminine’s name. It is only a spelling but the pronunciation   is still the same. For example Aimé that is a boys name, and Aimee that is a girls name but still pronounced the same although the spelling is different.

In French culture, their names are mostly added by suffixes like –et and –ot for boys name and for girls name they also add the suffixes like –ette and –otte. If you want to go to France it would much better to learn first on how to speak the proper pronunciation of their names. Pronunciation is very important if you want to understand French culture. There are websites that are intended only for French names if you want to know the proper spelling and proper pronunciation of their names. And always remember the hyphenated names and added by suffixes to read as one word.
