Avoiding Sleep Deprivation When You Bring Home Baby
One of the hardest things to adjust to when you first bring home your precious bundle of joy is that sleep seems to be gone forever. Not only do you have a sleep deficit built up from those last few uncomfortable weeks of pregnancy, now you have to get up every couple of hours and be alert enough to feed your infant. Your new baby won’t sleep for a whole night for a while, either. Some babies it takes a few weeks while others can take months before sleeping 6-8 hours at a stretch.
In the beginning, you are going to have to learn to get your sleep in whenever you get the chance. Too many women try to use the time that their baby naps to clean the house or catch up on other chores. Let the house go a little bit and take care of yourself instead. It’s much better for your health and your sanity if you sleep when the baby sleeps. It may not be quite as restful as sleeping a normal night but it will help keep your energy levels up.
Take advantage of any offers of help, whether it be from grandma or the neighbor or your best friend. When they offer to help with dinner or help do the laundry, thank them graciously and go get some rest! They offer because they care about you and your new little one so allow them to help like they want.
At this time of your life, avoiding caffeine is a good idea just because you don’t need anything that may hinder your ability to get to sleep. Eat a good balanced diet so you maintain good energy levels through the day but can still get to sleep at night. Try to do some exercise each day, preferably outside, weather permitting. Fresh air and exercise are good for shedding post-pregnancy weight as well as helping your body to unwind and relax.
