Anaphylactic Shock and Its Outcomes on Babies

Anaphylactic shock is defined as a harsh response of the body to certain vaccines, antibiotics, insect stings or other antigens that may be the basis of the condition of total collapse. Generally, human bodies react to the presence of antigen, or a foreign substance, and generate an antibody or compound that can make the foreign gist harmless.

In some persons, sensitivity to certain antigens initiates to react, which is very detrimental and can be very perilous.  Any person, especially babies who suffer from major reaction from a shot or insect bite should be promptly brought to the nearest doctor for urgent medication.

Symptoms can be visible, minutes or hours later from the contact to a substance. A baby who is suffering from an anaphylactic shock would experience the following indications:

  • Inflammation on the skin, lips, throat, tongue, or face
  • Complexity in breathing
  • Hasty pulse or rough heartbeat
  • Irritation
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Very insipid skin and sweating, skin reddishness, or blue skin color

Typically, most people suffering from anaphylactic shock, (especially babies) are allergic to any substance.  Common source of the anaphylaxis are the following:

  • Peanuts, tree nuts (walnuts and cashews).
  • Seafood like shellfish, shrimps, lobster and fish.
  • Milk and eggs are generally the problem; food can cause an extreme allergic reaction, though.
  • Medical drugs, particularly, the antibiotics.
  • Insect bites and stings from bumblebees, honeybees, yellow jackets, hornets, wasps, fire ants, and harvester ants.
  • Food preservatives and colorings (like FDC yellow No. 5)

How will you keep your baby away from anaphylactic shock?

Avert from buying any food that contains substance that may cause allergic reactions to your baby. You must be inquisitive about your child’s food, especially when eating in fast-food or restaurants. You may ask the chef or any personnel in the restaurants what kind of ingredients the food contains. Doing this lets you evade from potential allergic reactions.

Don’t let your baby walk barefooted, especially outside. They may sometimes step unto some stinging or biting insects like bees or ants. Let him play in the area free from and bugs and harmful insects.

If in case, your baby is bitten by any of these harmful insects and is having problem with his breathing or suddenly becomes unconscious afterward, take him to the nearest hospital or better yet contact 911. While waiting for the paramedics to arrive stay calm and put his body down while his foot elevated. If he is feeling scared, try to calm him down too.

Paramedics would usually inject epinephrine to make the reaction impede, for a couple of minutes. Epinephrine makes the heart beat robustly, unwinds the muscles in the airway, lessens inflammation, and improves tone in the blood vessels to increase blood flow to vital areas like the heart and brain.

For further diagnosis, your baby should be taken to the hospital so that doctors will be able to identify the main source of the problem. Preferably, you should bring your baby to a pediatric allergist.
