11 Tips for the First Stage of Labor

- Have your partner help you try different positions to minimize the discomfort and to promote relaxing.

- Empty your bladder frequently.

- Panting helps keep you from pushing too early, and breathing exercises distract your mind from the intense contractions.

- Change positions frequently. Try to roll from side to side, sit, or get on your hands and knees on the bed. These changes in position will help relax your muscles and regulate your breathing so you and the baby get more oxygen.

- Put ice packs on your back to relax tense muscles and numb the back pain.

- Keep close contact with your partner or coach. At this point you may want to be left alone to internalize your feelings and pain. Don’t let this happen! Prearrange a signal to let your spouse or coach know you’re feeling this way. Tell yourself to keep listening to your coach. This is probably the most critical time for your coach to offer encouragement.

- Request something for pain. Talk with your doctor or midwife about this before you go into labor. Know what’s available, the degree of relief you can expect, and when and how the medication is given. This is often the time when women request something for pain if they haven’t already had an epidural.
