10 Ways to Encourage Your Child’s Learning

Funny how parents feel that — just because they pay the tuition, which they think pays primarily for the salary which then entitles them (so they think again) to heap abuse on the faculty — teachers should be at their beck and call.

There are plenty of parents who rely on the teachers to do the job not just in educating their children but also instilling in them core values and then some. A number of moms and dads automatically lay blame on the teacher when their kids act up or come home unkempt and rumpled.

Meetings always see parents speaking up about what they want from their children’s teachers. Well, the teachers felt that it was time all parents know what educators want. And they are:

1. Involve yourself in your child’s learning. It means a lot to your child because he or she would feel that you care for his or her education.

2. Make learning materials available at home. Have encyclopedia, educational magazines and books available in your house.

3. Show your children the value of reading by setting yourself as an example. Show them that you enjoy reading books, newspapers and informative magazines.

4. Support them to do their best in school. Explain to your children the importance of education.

5. Monitor your children’s performance in school. There should be a balance between extracurricular activities and schoolwork.

6. Determine those factors that may affect your children’s performance in school. Help them attain a sense of balance between outside commitments and school responsibilities.

7. Pay attention to their social activities, like partying, and drinking habits as well. Most parents fail to notice that alcohol is more abused than illegal drugs.

8. Abide school regulations. Follow them accordingly.

9. Employ pressure in a positive way. Don’t set your expectations too high for them. You may push them a little bit to work hard but not too much that they end up hating you.

10. Coordinate with the teacher if you sense that there is something wrong going on with your child.

Embrace your responsibility as parents. It is still your job to teach your child basic good manners and right conduct at home. The teachers are there to assist you on educating your children, not to take over your position as parents.
